Bill Moyers is retiring from journalism at the end of the year, but he's going out with a swan song -- or a phoenix fire. I think he's hoping for more fire-proof journalists. The article can be found here. [livejournal.com profile] ltlj, [livejournal.com profile] stakebait, [livejournal.com profile] calligrafiti, I think y'all might want to see this.

I don't think there are words for that.

Oh, too true. Radio has gone to hell, at least in some aspects. On the other hand, indy media and the bloggers have risen to take its place... they're not quite there, but they're working hard, and they have the right ethic. And there are web sites out there to help them learn (Poynter is excellent; I used it all last year when I was a part of that profession).

That combined with the fact that we have at least one talk show host who felt strongly enough about things to run for Congress... and is winning handily. For balloting purposes he's a democrat, but he openly touts himself as "an independent voice for common sense." I hope he wins, and I hope he is the pointy end of a rather large thorn in the side of Business As Usual... gods know we need such a thing.

Point is, amongst all the chaos, I think there is hope. This environment is very reminescent of the period 1760-1775, where the movers and shakers met in taverns and got their news from wanderers... only the taverns and wanderers are virtual and instantaneous.

I think it's time we turned the world upside down again. We can do it, if we put our minds to it. There are more of Us than there are of Them, and we're smarter, and most of us can shoot straight if we have to. This will not be easy. But it's Worth Doing.

It doesn't surprise me, but it does scare the hell out of me.

Not everything was better. There is more acceptance of us weirdoes than there has been since 300CE, and we have faster ways to talk to more people with different ideas than ever before. Our world (cyberspace) knows no boundaries. And that same community has learned to share, and has cultivated an ethic of sharing on a scale previously unknown.

IT WAS the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way
-- Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities, speaking of 1775 (of all years)

De ja vu all over again, eh?

Thank you for the link. I'll miss Moyers', and I hope he's right about the rise of blogs helping to contain the corporate control of paid journalism.

You must have been warned against letting the golden hours slip by ... some of them are golden only because we let them slip by. - James Matthew Barrie,

Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who only dream by night. - Edgar Allen Poe

I often warn people: Somewhere along the way, someone is going to tell you, 'There is no "I" in team.' What you should tell them is, 'Maybe not. But there is an "I" in independence, individuality and integrity.' - George Carlin
