Susanna Clarke is far, far more polite than I think I'll *ever* manage to be. She managed not to let a question about the fay in her stories turn into Tolkien vs. Childe's Ballads (I was trying not to giggle, remembering the scene in
ajhalluk's Dissipation and Despair), and she was polite when answering the jackass who wanted to know why it took her ten years to write one book. (Answer: A day job, a lot of research, and it is a very long book.)
The novel, which I finally finished Wednesday, really *is* quite that good. And her talk was a pleasure, although most of it I already knew from the website. But a gracious lady, a pleasant reading, and I have an autographed book for me, and one for
tarshaan. Off to go hiking tomorrow.
